Alchemy

….on the subject of chemistry and alchemy, the pursuit of combining properties and matter to achieve an end result has always been a point of interest to me. People who possess the brilliance and intellect that I can not hope to grasp the smallest fraction of enlightenment have humbled me beyond reason.

It must me a challenge tweaking ingredients to obtain a satisfactory goal and I would never assume to challenge anyone working in this field. It is for this very reason that I have come to regard the Tim Horton girls as true alchemists of the modern age and worthy of such a stature. That delicate balance of a double double coffee must be among the greatest of all challenges as it is rarely duplicated. The countless occasions where I have asked for a double double at the drive through window only to spit it out on my blouse because of the quantity of either the first or second double is beginning to make me think that being a Horton’s Employee must require at least and MBa in science.

Today I had the forethought of trying my coffee while I was still at the window and I managed to get out “How many fucking sugars did you put in here” before my body went into insulin shock. FOUR. If I were a sarcastic person, I could have a heyday with this one, but seeing how I don’t have a sarcastic bone in my body. I really need to know how ”double, double” correlates to 4 sugars and 4 creams. Maybe there are things in this life that we are not meant to know. Cosmic secrets of the universe, presence of deities and so on. The way this woman looked at me when I inquired why they put four sugars and four creams in what most people have come to accept as 2 sugars and two creams make my blood drain from my heart.

4 out of the 8 hundred Tim Horton’s here put anywhere from 4 – 6 sugars in a double and 3 – 5 creams in a double. All the rest seem to only put in two of each. It astounds me that with all the money these places generate, why Head Office wouldn’t send their employees on, I don’t know…, a 6 month training course on sugar and cream ratios. I would think that the resources and technology are available to get close to the cure even if it is impossible to completely eradicate miscalculations and human error.
